The ceremonies to open four new three-bedroom homes in the Center City area of Kansas City were simple but their message had a deeper meaning for local residents. The message was clear. The neighborhood has new life.
GTIP and City Vision Ministries Construction held a grand opening ceremony for the four new rental units on the 3300 block of Forest Avenue June 4. Sandra McFadden Weaver, 3rd District Councilwoman, served as master of ceremonies as local civic leaders discussed what had been and what is planned for the future. Speaking at the event was Gloria Nelson, Center City Neighborhood President; Andrew Boeddeker, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and Brandon Laster, Missouri Housing Development Commission.
Councilwoman McFadden Weaver mentioned that many people believed in the development and have worked hard to see this first phase be completed. It was easy to see the impact the development would have. Crews worked just a few doors down on another rental home, refurbishing it both inside and out. Adjacent lots sit waiting for new construction to continue the rebuilding of the neighborhood.
The four three-bedroom homes are universal design homes. Universal design homes include the removal of steps and the inclusion of wider doorways and hallways; careful attention to details and fully accessible bathrooms and kitchens makes the homes safer, more convenient and comfortable. Universal design homes do not discriminate against occupants regardless of age, size or ability. They also allow individuals to “age in place.”
Funding for the development of the homes includes a $649,920 MHDC loan at one percent for 40 years and a $50,000 federal HOME loan. All residences must earn 50 percent or less of the local median income to qualify.
A reception and picnic lunch was hosted by the Lucky 11 Motorcycle Club, an active group in the efforts to redevelopment the Center City area.
