Dedication signifies new way of life for teen
mothers and their children
Almost Home, Inc. has invited partners and well-wishers to gather at 9
a.m., Aug. 10, at 3201 St. Vincent Avenue to commemorate a new step in
their services to teenage mothers and their children. The catholic-based
nonprofit transitional home will cut a ceremonial ribbon to open 12 new
apartments providing additional transitional homes. The three-story, 12
unit housing facility is located in south city on the corner of St.
Vincent and Compton Avenues.
Valori Sanders, MHDC’s Trust Fund Coordinator; William Siedhoff,
Director of Health & Human Services in St. Louis; and 19th Ward Alderman
Michael McMillan are scheduled to speak as part of the ceremonies.
Immediately following the ribbon cutting, the 12 apartments will be
dedicated in formal ceremonies.
Almost Home is an 11-year old organization which has aided more than 900
of the area’s disadvantaged youths. The organization operates a
transitional living program for teenage mothers and their children who
are homeless or without adequate living conditions. It is not simply a
shelter but a structured, long-term program that assists mother and
child to accomplish their goals of self-sufficiency and independence.
MHDC financing for the apartments includes a $475,000 federal HOME grant
and $142,076 in state and federal Rental Housing Tax Credits. Almost
Home, Inc. also received a $25,000 grant for operating support through
the Missouri Housing Trust Fund, administered by MHDC.
The Missouri Housing Trust Fund was created by the State Legislature in
1994 to help meet the housing needs of very low income families and
individuals. MHDC administers the Trust Fund, which provides grant
funding for a variety of housing needs, such as acquisition and/or
rehabilitation or new construction of rental housing (and related
services) for very low income families, rental assistance, emergency
housing aid and home repair.
MHDC is the state's housing finance agency. The Commission is dedicated
to strengthening communities and the lives of Missourians through the
financing, development and preservation of affordable housing. MHDC was
established by the 75th General Assembly in 1969. Since that time, MHDC
has encouraged and assisted in the production of affordable rental
housing and provided homeownership opportunities for thousands of
families. It has invested almost $4 billion in Missouri housing,
covering every county of the state, for rental housing developments,
home mortgages, home improvement loans, loans to landlords for
renovations, grants to neighborhood housing groups and other programs
