Restored Maple Avenue Apartments to Open in Truman
Historical Preservation District
KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- Cohen Esrey Housing Partners mark the completion of
their 64-unit Maple Avenue Apartments restoration project in the historic
heart of Independence with a ceremony at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9 at 604 W.
Maple Ave. The project rehabilitated a mix of historic 1920s era brick
apartment buildings and a former residential hotel in Independence. The 10
buildings are located on two blocks adjacent to the President Harry S Truman
Home and located in the Truman Historic Landmark District.
The 64-unit rehabilitation project in the historic heart of Independence is
financed through a $654,000 MHDC loan and $299,977 federal and state housing
tax credit, along with an $854,783 Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, a
$150,000 HOME fund loan from the City of Independence, and $250,000 of
McKinney Act funds. Firstar Corporation is also a partner in the
development.
The apartments are surrounded by the Downtown's Historic Courthouse Square
three blocks to the east, the old RLDS Temple and Headquarters (now
Community of Christ) directly south and a National Historic Landmark
residential neighborhood to the north and west. The development has the
longtime support of the city of Independence and the Midtown Truman Road
Corridor Redevelopment Corporation.
