Apartment
complex brings 48 new housing units to Marshall community
Special ribbon-cutting ceremonies marked the
official opening of the Valley Southwest Apartments complex in
Marshall on May 27. The 48-unit apartment complex includes 24
two-bedroom units, 24 three-bedroom units and a community center.
It was financed by the Missouri Housing Development Commission
through a $1.25 million HOME loan at zero percent interest for 40
years and $273,294 federal and state Rental Housing Tax Credits.
The complex was constructed by Crestwood
Building Associates, an affiliate of the Capstone
Development Corporation of St. Louis, through a
project undertaken by Missouri Valley Community Action Agency (MVCAA).
It contains eight buildings with six apartments each that are
available for rent by working families meeting income guidelines.
Brenda Hamlett, regional manager for Fairway
Management, which manages the property for MVCAA, led a group on a
tour of the apartments. She said rent is $365 for a three-bedroom
unit and $288 for a two-bedroom unit.
“We’re very proud to help people get affordable
housing,” said MVCAA Executive Director Ann Graff. “We want the
apartments to be as clean and comfortable for our tenants as we
would for our own family members. We have a very high standard and
we want our tenants to be happy.”
Graff introduced the public to the workings of
the complex’s community center and explained that a children’s
summer program is being offered. MVCAA also plans to continue the
program in the form of an after-school program this fall. A tutor
will be available for students needing assistance in their studies
or help with the computers and other learning systems at the center,
she said. It will be open for use by all of the residents of the
apartment complex.
