Governor proclaims June as National Homeownership Month

Missouri Governor Bob Holden has proclaimed June as National Homeownership Month in the state. An official proclamation was presented to U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonse Jackson during a town hall meeting June 5 at Adams Park Community Center in St. Louis.

Homeownership Month promotes homeownership and its many social and economic benefits. Homeownership Month focuses attention on homeownership issues and the information people need to achieve the American Dream. The events also serve to build support for the policies that have made homeownership a national priority in the United States.

Missouri Housing offers First Place Loans, a first-time homebuyer program; down payment assistance and home repair in some rural areas; and will unveil its new American Dream Downpayment Initiative program this summer. Each of these programs has income restrictions and is based on the availability of funds. More information is available through the MHDC Web site at www.mhdc.com.

Expanding homeownership opportunities and the availability of affordable homes for Missouri citizens strengthens our families financially, increases individual dignity, and improves our quality of life,” said Don Brinker, MHDC Homeownership Manager.

MHDC programs are offered through partnerships with participating lenders, community action agencies and other nonprofit organizations. Additionally, staff works closely with local real estate professionals to ensure the program reaches low and moderate income citizens who may be eligible.
